Actually, the story that I heard was that they were discovered by one of
the 15th C. explorers (I forget at the moment which one) and he called
them "Grapefruit" because they looked like bunches of grapes. Never
having seen grapefruit in anything other than a grocery store or produce
market, I have no idea what they look like growing, but that's the story
that I've heard. So...they are borderline period at best and they may
very well be out of period. However, they taste great, you can make lots
of candy from one grapefruit and I hate to throw away the peels when I
know what yummy stuff I can make out of it. I compost, but still it seems
like such a waste! I usually stick with lemon and orange for events, just
to be on the safe side. But I make grapefruit a lot just to eat! :-) BTW,
the lime makes the least interesting peel. It tastes okay, but the skin
is very thin, so it's not as easy to work with, and the color after
simmering a few times looks like something that ought to be in a military
uniform!
