SC - Anise question

While looking for herbs for my garden, I was told that anise only grows in
tropical climes, and was given a plant called (i think) Hyssop anise as a
substitute, using the leaves instead of seeds. Has anyone cooked with this
plant? And has anyone tried growing anise itself? I have lots of my
grandmother's recipes that call for it, and was hoping to be able to use
fresh herbs.

Thanks!

Raffaella
