By any chance was a test done for ptomaine? This was August, remember,
and the trial transcripts do refer to the endless procession of mutton
and broth, over a period of several days.

As regards the case in general, it does appear there wasn't enough
evidence to convict, and there were at least two other potential
suspects who had better motive and opportunity, and worse alibis.
