If the airlock is there a long time, things can live in it. If the CO2 
pressure drops, (or even otherwise) they might try their luck climbing up 
the inside (this only applies to ver very very small Things.

If it is filled with liquor they will get very drunk and drown. I have 
actually used a sterilising solution for the same purpose.

Also, the sort of bucket that delis buy fetta cheese in is fine for 
brewing, and cheap. Otherwise I buy buckets with a lid and a fitting for 
a tap.
