agreed, in a sense. if the poor people live where they can raise
chickens, they have a relatively inexpensive self renewing resource.
when we kept chix, we had hens and 1 rooster. they each put out an egg a
day after the age of 25-26 weeks. we kept steady at 1 dozen birds, and
ate about 3 whol chix each week, in addition to about 2 dozen eggs each
week. we went through 1 bag of mash each week, at 13$ for the chow,
recycled the eggshells for the calcium and used about 1$ worth of a
vitamine mix called broiler booster as well as supplimenting with veggie
trimmings from food prep. the texture of the meat and eggs wad noticably
different, as well as the taste. we are doing it again this
year[starting from scratch[hehehe] as we got rid of them all[yumm] as we
thought we were going to be sent to guam.]
