I agree with you about leaning towards the knife. The rubber band method is
used for convenience on many food animals- sheep, cattle, and goats, but
when I asked my veterinary why not on cats, dogs, and horses, he said it
was too dangerous, he felt it was inhumane, and he thought that the only
reason it was used on food animals was because of the relative lack of
expense in dealing with large quantities of animals.

: Somebody wrote about the rubber band method. It is quite common in 
: sheep-farming, both for castration and docking tails (Does Footrot Flats 
: sell in America?) But there is a permanent disagreement over which is the 
: more humane method. Me I lean towards the knife - the rubber band stays 
: there for a goodly while, and it seems to me to cater for squeamish 
: farmers rather than unhappy animals.
