this is a lovely idea for a cook's contest if we ever find that mythical
collegium site. form teams and give them a carton of appropriate period
ingredients and let them loose for the day. they could bring their own
source books for documentation and ideas and would all have the same time
period and cooking facilities to use.

I'd enjoy it.

[Digression]
When I was in Miami, the Herald did an article for its Sunday Magazine, on
how the head chef of a local restaurant offered to go home with someone at
the grocery store, and cook a gourmet meal out of what they had purchased,
and what they had.

No one would take him up on his offer: suspicion of scam runs high in Miami.
Eventually, they found a couple that had purchased: one pound of hamburger,
a package of hamburger rolls, and a head of lettuce. They were just about
to move out of state, and had remarkably little in their home. He had to
cheat, eventually, and borrow two eggs from a neighbor. He made burgers
with a coffee sauce (they had just been to Jamaica, and had some coffee
they'd bought for a friend) and a chocolate souffle out of melted ice cream
and the borrowed eggs. And a small salad with croutons from the extra
burger rolls.

What a nightmare: but inspirational to the grocery cart game.

who wants to be on my team?

Oh, Oh, me!!!
