SC - Quick question...

"Boy, does that remind me of my worst SCA moment as a herald."

You know, of course, that I shall DROP DOWN DEAD of curiosity until I
know what that moment was!! If it's just too grotesquely off-topic,
  please e-mail me privately.

It's off topic. But what the heck: once in a while you gotta go.

A friend of mine was receiving an AoA.... and she is quite the musician.
(She was running both the local vocal and instrumental programs in the SCA
at the time, and then went on to do graduate work in Early Music at Longy
School). Her AoA was written and set to music.

They hunted down a herald that could sing, at least a little, and
volunteered him. That was me. But I can't sight read at all, so off I went
with someone that could, and we rehearsed over and over again. I was weak,
but ready.

The event was to be very authentic, and the evenings "Court" was to be more
like a period one: a long evening of entertainment and the Crown, as they
sat in state. Occasional visitors with business, and the Queen or King
calling for musicians and disputations and poetry. It was going to be fun.

As we organized things, the King said "Hmmm, why don't I sing a song, and
then we can give Eliane an AoA?" Everyone said "Oh, goody, yes", and I said
"OK". Perhaps I should have wondered why people thought it was such a good
idea.

So, Court began. It was great fun, and lots of interesting things happened.
Then the King (Rhys of Harlech) got up to sing.

I had *NO* idea that he used to be an understudy at the Metropolitan Opera
in New York, and that he had studied professionally at Julliard. But he
belted out a couple of Trouvere songs from memory, and stilled the house.
Then he brought it down.

*T*H*E*N* I came out to quaver Eliane's AoA. I Did Not Want To Follow a
singer like that. But the Court Must Go On. So I did. I kinda screwed it
up from nervousness, but it came out alright.

I hate working with professionals, when I'm just an amateur. But I learned
one thing that night: The SCA is the MOST forgiving and loving audience
that there is: because I was treated just as well as Rhys, if not nearly as
deservingly.
