     I have been reading all the posts about how you displayed/entered 
     culinary categories for A&S with interest.

    What are the norms in some of the other kingdoms?  Is Meridies the 
     only one that discourages the meal entry?
     
     
I think the confusion here is that the displays that have been described have
been entered in "general" or "open" A&S competitions, as opposed to a food
item entered into a cooking category?  At least that is the idea I got from
this thread.
For instance at an event there are competition categories- 
science: bookmaking
art: calligraphy
a&s: open (or perhaps a specific time or place)
cooking: soup
brewing: mead
and the meal display was entered under "open", as an arts & science
presentation rather than a specific cooking competition.
Then again I could have it all wrong, and I could see where it would be very
hard to judge an entire meal entered in a competition against other single
dishes (but then the tongue and stomach would probably be happy).
