That's how I started!  A good baker and a lot of cooking to learn.
"The Joy of Cooking" is a bible - methods, ingredients explainations and
all sorts of useful places to start.
"The Way to Cook" is another great one - don't let Julia Child intimdate
you - the book is methodical, with lots of pictures and builds on what 
it teaches.

I found it easier to learn to cook from modern sources and then apply 
the knowledge to medieval cooking, but you can certainly do them in
parallel - step one is really just to get in the kitchen!
