Milord, well spoken.
I have long made it a practice, whenever I feastocrat something, of putting in the following info in ALL event copy going out:
Feastocrat: <name><number>. **Please contact the feastocrat with any questions/concerns you may have regarding allergies, food sensitivities, etc. There will, as always, be vegetarian items available.**
In four years, I have gotten one --ONE-- phone call. Then, a few months ago at a meeting, a very dear vege friend who attends all my feasts happened to mention she can't stand mushrooms. (Being a mushroom lover; I have an unfortunate tendency to put mushrooms in a lot of my vege dishes.)
You can please some of the people some of the time....

I think that, if we make ourselves available ahead of time AND make a basic dish-by-dish ingredient list available during the feast, that we have indeed done all we can possibly do. If someone has an almond-oil-allergy attack during one of my feasts I would be horrified and very, very upset and concerned; but I wouldn't feel guilty. If you have an allergy it IS your responsibility to watch out for yourself (which is exactly what I tell my walnut-allergic husband every time I smack his hand for picking up a chocolate-chip cookie before asking what the nuts are!)
