It's pretty evident that the Normans brought rabbits or coneys (yes, as
in Coney Island) to Britain. Hares were either indigenous or were
brought by the Romans (I forget which and can't check at the moment).
The Romans also raised hares in Britain, indigenous or otherwise.

Bearing in mind the fact that  pre-Norman Britain is not necessarily the
be-all and end-all of Celtic civilization, it still remains to be seen
when and where the original poster is talking about...
