I was raised in a foster-home of avid hunters and was always told that
it's important to kill the animal right away rather than just injuring
it because if the animal dies in terrible pain or horrible fright or
after thrashing around or running, the meat will be tough because of
adrenaline surges.

I have no empiral proof of this, of course...it could just be an "old
hunter's tale."
