There weren't that many New World ingredients that had been introduced and
diffused throughout Europe until after 1650. There were a few -- the potato
was beginning to be found (as animal fodder), but not that many. Most of what
was seen were novelties. Judging from what I know of people's reactions to
potatoes and chocolate during their introductions, New World novelties just
didn't gain widespread acceptance right away.
