Actually, chocolate for consumption is just post period in Europe; 1579, I
believe it was sent to Italy as a novelty, but no mention of it being
ingested.  1631 is the first recipe I have found.  It was all the rage in the
New World (just to show that those uncivilized barbarians had developed
*something* good).
