Actually hot peppers were a major agricultural crop in the Mediterranean
basin by the year 1523 which is well within our period. And I suspect, but
have no evidence, that sweet peppers would also have been in use. However,
due to the associations of mango-type peppers with the new world it is
probably best , IMO, to avoid their use when presenting a period feast unless
you can find actual period recipes that show them as a listed ingredient. It
is my understanding that such recipes don't exist but I may be mistaken.
