A Montgomery County fish wholesaler pleaded guilty yesterday in =
Syracuse, N.Y., to selling tons of tainted eels to stores in =
Philadelphia's Chinatown and to other customers around the world

Kratchman bought 15,000 pounds of the contaminated Lake Ontario eels =
since last year and sold them to unsuspecting clients.

Eels from Lake Ontario and its tributaries have been blacklisted by =
federal authorities since high levels of toxic substances and pesticides =
suspected of causing cancer, such as mirex and polychlorinated biphenyls =
(PCBs), were found in them in the 1970s

Kratchman owns Norristown-based Delaware Valley Fish Co

Assistant U.S. Attorney Craig A. Benedict said that an undercover =
investigation was stopped when it became apparent that the eels were to =
be sold to larger companies that sell fish on a retail basis around the =
world. Benedict said a Canadian fish company had already been indicted =
in the investigation.

Benedict declined yesterday to say where Kratchman had bought the eels =
or to whom they had been sold. Investigators said half the batch of eels =
had been sold to retail outlets in the country, including stores in =
Pennsylvania and New York. One investigator said some of the tainted =
eels were sold in some stores in Chinatown as well as other markets in =
Philadelphia. The rest were sold abroad.
