I remember it as:

I heard that the song itself is a Victorian piece but is based on a
longstanding mid-European (German or Polish) custom of sharing food and a
bowl of warm mulled wine with friends who visit at Christmas....something
about honoring the Holy Family's trek to Bethlehem

Good King Wenseslaus (sp) is a similar custom I think
