Paprika is a capsicum pepper and is New World--but may have gone into use
in the Old World somewhat before 1600. I think the reason capsicum peppers
are called peppers is that some of them (hot peppers) have a "peppery"
taste--i.e. a taste similar to that of black pepper, which is an unrelated
old world plant.
