?. Invention implies invention. :-) A process was invented in the late 1800's
whereby the outer skins of dried peas were removed and the pea literally spit
in half. This was not an agricultural invention but rather a food processing
technology invention.

No they are not a specific pea but rather a processing technique. Specific
peas would be referred to by terms such as varieties or even species or type
(rarely) or in the Current Middle Ages possibly hybrids. "Invention" would
not be used to describe specific pea varieties.
