I think this is a clear case of what some folks have said about
periodicity, or acceptability for SCA use, anyway, being specific to
place and time. I have no objections to 815 being the beginning of
chivalry, knighthood, and the divine right of kings, etc. (although I
thought Charlemagne was crowned before 815). For the continent, that
could be said to be the beginning of the things that typify the Middle
Ages. For me, in Britain, the pulling out of the Roman legions in
407-410 CE, marks the simultaneous end of the Classical or Graeco-Roman
Age, and the end of tribalism, and the beginning of nationalism, which
also might be said to typify the Middle Ages. Besides, it's the Age of
Arthur, and he's much cooler than Charlemagne, anyway ;  ) .

Luckily, corpora has no stated early cut-off date anyway.
