Tatties (specifically bashit tatties, as eaten wi' the grrrrreat
chieftain o' the puddin' race, haggis) are buttered, mashed potatoes.
Neeps (also bashit, in this case), are bashit...ahem...mashed turnips
with butter, and sometimes just a tiny hint of sugar. The major
difference is that in Scotland, turnips are assumed to be yellow ones,
or rutabaga. To distinguish between them and what the rest of the world
calls turnips, the adjective "white" is added, in Scotland. Elsewhere,
turnips are assumed to be white, with a touch of purple about the skin,
and the adjective "yellow" is added to the word "turnip" to indicate
rutabaga.

Are you confused enough yet? ; )

BTW: tatties and neeps are generally served side by side, but there are
some heretics who like to mix them...I have a perfectly good stomach
which can take care of that for me, thank you very much. Eeeeeeyewww!!!
