quickie history lesson-when rome had not yet sucked in etruria, the
celts and etrurians were fighting about land in cisalpine gaul, the
etrurians sent a party of enoys including a few roman observers who were
slaughtered by the gauls, rome decided to start a war, which they lost.
the gauls actually invaded the urbs of rome itself[nifty description in
cato(i think)] of the senators with their long white beards seated on
their chairs as the gauls enter the city. they tweak a beard and the
senator hits the gaul with his rod of office and the gauls kill the
senators. gauls 1 plus a bunch of gold, roma 0. the romans never quite
got over it.
