You mean there _is_ a use for minute rice? Apart from killing off birds, 
that is[1].

[1] In London it is suggested that you throw *boiled* rice on the newly
wedded couple, since (1) the pigeons eat the rice, which then (2) swell
inside said bird, and (3) thus leave dead, presumably bloated, birds
decorating the landscape. This is a totally separate question from "what
happens to gulls which catch pieces of sodium thrown from a bridge" (I
have second-hand reports, supposedly based on empirical research, stating
that, no, they do not explode).
