The Donner Party was a group of settlers following {up to a point} the
Oregon Trail who decide to follow a "short cut" through the Nevada
Sierras and got stuck in a early snow storm in Oct. (23 feet of snow,
actually) They had to resort to cannibalism to survive. The PBS Program,"
The American Experience" has an excellent episode on it. If fact, the
story of the Donner Party slowed migration to the west for a couple of
years - then gold was found at Sutter's Mill in 1849, and, well, then
....
