SC - pickled herring

I have never heard of cooking pickled herring!!  Just like you wouldn't cook
ceviche or sushi!!
My mother always kept a few jars around.  We were also able to buy them at
the deli counter of many supermarkets in NYC.  We always ate them with either
bagels or crackers.
