Esko, I haven't seen any direct response to your plea, so allow you
me to provide you with the Baker household's sovereign remedy for
creating edible okra (file this one as probably OOP, folks, and for
which reason I'll directly credit my mother and both grandmothers
for teaching me the One True Way...<gryn>).

Take okra from plants (knife and gloves optional, but encouraged).
Barring picking it fresh in the back garden, find as fresh as you
can. Wash thoroughly, drain completely.

Slice crosswise, forming small disks instead of long "planks". Keep
the small tips, too: they help with evental timing of the cooking
process. Dredge in a mixture of white flour, corn meal, and spices
(salt, pepper, etc.), covering all portions of the individual
pieces. (The goo, errrr, mucilage assists in this, but my mother
often beats an egg lightly into a small amount of milk, dredges the
okra through *that* first, and then continues with the
flour-meal-spice dredge.)
Deep fat fry until the tips and edges are dark brown. Remove from
grease/oil, drain, and serve hot. If there are leftovers from the
main meal, call my Dad for dessert while it is still warm, or
refrigerate (overnight) and eat in place of popcorn later.

If reduced to using pre-breaded frozen okra, the flavor and texture
improve by deep-frying longer than is the case for most restaurants
in Texas and Oklahoma. (Again, until dark brown or the crumbs of
extra batter begin to turn black.)
