I couldn't say one way or another as to whether it's period or not,
but I grew up in Switzerland, and certainly the particular curing
method that produces the "raclette" cheese makes it melt smoothly, and
on bread (or over potatoes) is regarded as a "traditional" food in
many parts of the country.
