This kind of reminds me of the first brave soul who pulled a lobster (ugly
looking things that they are) from the ocean and said, "hmm, I wonder how
this tastes." My boyfriend mentions this everytime we eat lobster, so it's
not my fault.>>

In Maine there was a law on the books that stated employers could NOT
feed lobster to their employes(domestic servants) more than a set number of
times per week. It varied from town to town. In the late 18C to Mid 19C
lobster was considered a junk fish/poor food. It was sold for 10 cents for a
5 pound bushel. Before that time there is little evidence supporting people
eating lobster. A very low number of shells have been found in the Native
American shell middens.
In the early I800's poor people would send their children down to the
shore to pick up lobsters after a bad storm b/c they would be so plentiful
they would simply wash up. By the 1910, the price of a lobster newberg
entree was $1.50 in Bar Harbor

Who wishes she could still get lobsters for 10 cents/5 lbs!
