re: peerage "flavors"

Sir Cyr (a transplant from calontir to our lucky barony in An Tir) once 
said "if they're a peer, they're a peer. it's only a matter or which 
bucket they go into. The important thing is that they're a peer, not the 
bucket" (he said it much more eloquently, of course).

I always liked that analogy. All Peerages are for service. A Knight 
serves the kingdom through his martial arts, teching others, being an 
example of chivalry and graciousness and serving the King. A Pelican 
serves the kingdom through administration, teaching others, being an 
example of chivalry and graciousness and serving the King. A Laurel 
serves the kingdom through the Arts and Sciences, teaching others, being 
an example of chivalry and graciousness and serving the King. Like Sir 
Cyr said, it's only a matter of which bucket you put 'em in.

Please, also keep in mind that if you ask a dozen peers what a peer is, 
you'll get two dozen answers :). This is my spin on it, and so reflects 
me, my teachers and my kingdom.

If a King and his council sees the production of feasts to be a service 
to the running of the kingdom, he'll call it "pel work". If he sees it as 
an art/science, he'll call it "laurel work". The big Question still 
remains, is this hardworking joe a Peer?
