But then we'd have to fight over who gets to apply the
healing balme of seedless raspberry puree, or other

OOTC (semi-serious):
Much has been made infamous in prudish company over the 
last two hundred years (at least!) about the licentious 
behaviours of the ancients when it came to using the 
human body as one of the serving platters, or in gratuitous 
display as an accompaniment to the delectables being served.
(The cliche of a slave peeling grapes, or a tableux of
living [or sculpture] nudes decorating the table, are
two commonly-invoked images.)

So, any observations on related practices in post-Roman
feast presentation? 

Sources for descriptions, pro or con?

Current Middle Age anecdotes of a feast salvaged -- or spoilt! --
by the human-display component of presentation?
