Compost and compote are two different spellings of the same word, which,
regardless of the widely accepted modern definitions of each, have
morphed a bit over time. Compost is also the name of a dish of pickled
fruits and vegetables, as per The Forme of Cury, c. 1390 or so.
"Compote" is a French form that evolved over years of the French people
dropping the "s", as with the French equivalents of "hospital",
"hostel", and "beast".
