and those of you who are "sombodies" with fancy hats or other regalia often
seem unapproachable to those of us who have nothing more than an aoa, if that.

I know, off the cooks topic.

Nice lady... I was who I was all along. Five minutes before the Crown
surprised me with this dangle-thing, I was just the same as 5 minutes after.

I've said this before I got the big-dingle, and I still believe it is true:
by and large, a Peerage or other high award is not just a sign of longevity:
but a sign of acceptability. It is a very good marker to say "this person
you are about to talk to plays the game well, loves it, and is good enough
to be worth knowing."

It's the Good Housekeeping seal of approval. It's the Underwriters
Laboratories safety rating. It's two thumbs up from Siskel and Ebert.

It also means that, whether we like it or not, we have an especial
obligation to continue to put back into the game what we have gotten out of
it through the years.

By way of saying: if I were to attend an event somewhere, and know no one,
I'd race up to people with Peerages and Pearls, and say hi. Because it
improves the odds of finding someone that loves the game.

Peer fear means that you are eliminating from your social sphere the very
group of folks you most should meet. One of the major reasons I don't wear
the pearls too often is because they act as "new folks bane".

Tibor, Baron of the Court (I admit to it only rarely)
