SC - Cooking-previous experience

  May I add to the above list of questions, how many of you who are
  regularly feast cooks and who rank above 'altar-boy' on the heirarchy
  were competant cooks before SCA?  I mean did you learn because you
  were into the SCA, or did you have a cooking backround before?
I have never cooked a feast (helped in kitchens, yes, but not the entire
feast).  But I do consider myself at least slightly above average in the
kitchen.
I started to attend cooks guild to learn to cook. I'd taught myself cookery
back when I was first living on my own, by the best method possible.  I was
broke, and I cooked whatever was on sale, and I *HAD* to eat it or starve.
This taught flexibility and provided motivation.  (:-)
I've been an experienced eater of fine foods for years, and I read a lot of
cook books and technique books as well.  I guess I started from a standing
start at about age 21.  My mother (who was quite a gifted cook) refused to
let me cook in her kitchen: she had a thing about messes.  Since she was a
stay-at-home mother, I didn't get a lot of cooking in.
