SC - Shortbread help, please

Been there, done that!  I first tried to make shortbread for my 
husband's family on our first Christmas.  The dough would hold 
together but crumbled when I tried to ROLL it out (I thought I would 
use cookie cutters).  After half an hour of "new wife hysterics" my 
husband called his mother who explained to me that this was perfect, 
and could I just pat it into a pan now.
