It is my experience that in the SCA, chocolate desserts always win over
period ones. *sigh*. If your goal is to win, unless the judges are Tibor
and Berengaria :), the flourless chocolate tourte will do it, especially
if served with a nice raspberry sauce. Garnish the heck out of it, and
  you're a shoe in.

Ahem. I don't eat chocolate. That doesn't mean I don't *like* it.

If I was to enter a "no holds barred" dessert competition, I'd probably
avoid chocolate. That is the favorite flavor of every competitor. I'd
consider something that makes chocolate taste funny, but is every bit as
sinister... A spiced rum flavored zabaglione, or something like that.

But my soul cries out for Schwartzwalderkirchtorte, or Venetian Seven Layer
Cake. When I was little, my parents used to take me to evenings at the NY
Philharmonic, and we'd stop at the Eclair Pastry Shop on the way home.
Despite the name, the place was very Viennese and Eastern European: my
mother would order for us, in Hungarian, and we'd get something marvelous
every time. If I had behaved during the performance, we'd also get eclairs
to take home for the following night's dinner. My mother kinda wigged out
(in a gentle, refined, European sort of way) when a bakery local to us in
the 'burbs started to carry Eclair's line of baked goods fresh every day.

Them's were days, alright. I freely admit, I've earned my illness. (:-)
