Excuse my ignorance, but aren't marazapan solties period? I've sculped in
marzapan for SCA feasts feaastcratted by a Mistress of the Laurel, and it was
she that put me on to them... I never thought to check for myself. (Art majors
are always asked to so the drawing or sculpting)

Yes, I believe Marzipan is period and was used in this way. I think it
is just ground almonds. When I said modern, I was referring to the 
traditions mentioned with the plastic kettles and not to the use of marzipan.

Sugar paste is another period paste used in molding things. There is
some great information from Alys Katharine about working with sugar
paste in this file in my Florilegium:

I imagine working with marzipan would be similar although I don’t think
I have any messages specifically on working with it.
