Yes boiling alive versus boiling already dead does affect the taste of 
lobster.  I kill my lobster just before putting it into boiling water.  You 
still want to buy your lobster live.  If the lobster is freshly killed 
right before you put it in boiling water it is supposed more humane but 
also the meat tends to taste sweeter.  To kill a lobster before boiling 
insert a knife between the carapace and the tail.  Lobster is also good 
grilled and stuffed.  This time split the lobster form head to tail on the 
bottom side of the lobster.  Mix cracker crumbs with melted butter and 
stuff the opening of the lobster.  I usually use Ritz or some other buttery 
tasting cracker.  When cooking lobster on a grill crack the claws slightly 
this lets a little of the liquid drain out of the claws so you don't wind 
up with water all over your plate and your stuffing wet.  On a large
Weber kettle  you should be able to cook 5 lobsters (1 and 1/4 pound).

I was told that the boiling alive was for food safty reasons {you don't
gut and clean lobster}?
