SC - Eggs "Born On Date"

<Dont American eggs have a use-by date either stamped on the egg (current
legislation) or on the box?>

On one of the wonderful scandal sheet news programs (dateline, 20/20 etc) they
did an article on eggs that were taken out of the dated boxes and recycled
into newer dated boxes!!!  Salmonella anyone??  Yum!!

I'm sure that not all egg distributers do this.  

And I know that I like most folks do not necessarily always use by the date on
the carton.  Most dates that i see anyway are a "Sell By This Date" marker
anyway.  How long is the product "safe" after the sell by date??
