according to my husband, Flake bars were invented thusly:

At the choco bar factory, the employees would, from time to time, scrape up
the spillage from along the outside of the candy molds, they were allowed to
carry the resulting mushed together scrapings home. All the local kiddies
loved them so much that the company decided to sell the stuff.

Perhaps this is a UK urban legend, but he swears it is true.
