Absent purchasing a churn, the pickle jar idea is good.  With a crowd of
children no one has to shake for very long.  My daugter's class made butter
using heavy cream (not the kind in a paper carton, but the unhomogenized, very
thick kind we can get in a glass jar) inside a ziploc, inside another ziploc. 
Shaken, smoosed and generally agitated until *butter*.  Using that same brand
of cream, I've accidently made it when I was distracted using a hand blender
to make whipped cream.
