I'd have been fuming.  

In the first place, the royals should have been well aware of the limited time
frame, and known to work within it.  "The King's word is law" my foot.  The
king is a member as well and ought to be well aware of the mundane
restrictions on the event he gets to play at.  Anyone that really gets to
thinking they can be that inconsiderate of the other SCA members is an ass.

In the second place, the hall steward should have done what the kitchen worker
finally thought to do.  That's part of the job.  

In the third place, all of that about Execution had better have been a joke
between friends.  It certainly is not impertinent to expect someone to have
consideration for everyone else on site, no matter if they are tin hats.
