The Danelaw was a Viking, specifically Danish, functional kingdom in England,
taking up a good-sized chunk of the Northeast of Britain, existing from roughly
850 to 950 C.E. I believe Alfred the Great is credited with reconquering the
territory.

I'm not up on the finer details of this late period stuff, but that's the gist
of it.
