I am curious, Ive been looking everywhere for scotch bonnets, I thought they
were the same as habanero? I thought scotch bonnet was the jamacian name
for
the same pepper?... >>
Having lived in Texas and grown up in the Caribbean, I can attest to the fact
that there is a difference, albeit subtle, between scotch bonnets and
habaneros.
Habaneros are predominant in the Southwest, while Scotch bonnets are Caribbean
- - They taste very similiar and are a different color, when ripe. Scotch
Bonnets ripen to a lucious orange while Habaneros go red. They are both
wonderfully flavorful and VERY hot unlike some other peppers that are merely
hot with little unique flavor. I think Scotch Bonnets have a tinge more sweet
to the flavor. But, as I said, it is a subtle difference. Not being a
scientist, I am probably oversimplifying but I would guess that they are of
the same family and closely related.
Best wishes for a warm and wonderful holiday to one and all!!!
