What you said about barley not being eaten in Germany is very interesting.  I
read recently of a similar reaction to various seaweeds and other wild foods
on the part of the Irish, in the years after the Great Famine.  Eating these
things reminded them of that terrible time, and no one wanted to eat 'famine
food'.  (This might come from either Darina Allen's Complete Book of Irish
Country Cooking, or from Dorothy Hartley's Food in England.  Hmmm...probably
the Irish one..)
