For some reason this bounced back as undeliverable, so I am trying again.
And I never made it to sew banners; cancelled first night due to sick child,
second due to weather. The project is cursed.

But this does give me time to make some cranberry fudge before the next
attempt. <G>

	I figured I should have a better title than "SCA-COOK Digest #1144"!

Using milk to make an opaque white gelatin is common, at least in
asian desserts (often using agar, a vegetarian gelatine-like substance). I
have at least one period receipt for a milk custard that is of similar
texture. So use milk.

Black is traditionally done with cooked blood. No kidding. There
is a receipt in "To the King's Taste" or "To the Queen's Taste" which speaks
of making striped coloured fat, and blood is used for black. If you
absolutely must have black, try using a root beer syrup or something like
that, if you want it to be periodoidish.

For purple, grape juice may work. Note that grape juice may end up
looking more like red or black, depending upon the juice and the opacity.

I'm a librarian in mundane life, and I just spotted a review
in the Dec.
21 issue of "Publishers Weekly" that is likely to be of
interest to the
gentles on this list. A cookbook is coming out in February:

Gitlitz, David, and Linda Kay Davidson, _A Drizzle of Honey:
The Life and
Recipes of Spain's Secret Jews_ St. Martin's Press, $29.95
352 pages.
		ISBN 0-312-19860-4

According to the review the authors are professors at the
Univ. of Rhode
Island. The work is a cookbook of Spanish crypto-Jews --
Jews who
outwardly converted to Christianity in the late 15th
century, while
secretly maintaining much of their original faith and
customs. There are
16 pages of endnotes and a 6-page bibliography. The review
indicates that
the book contains redacted recipes. There is no indication
how many
recipes appear in the book and if the original recipes are
included.
_Drizzle of Honey_ is listed at amazon.com.

Instead of "crypo-Jews," they are often referred to as "Conversos."
Many of the habits from halacha, the Jewish laws, are followed by their
descendants today even if they do not understand why, such as avoidance of
pork and shellfish. Also, many have a magen David (six-pointed star) and
other symbols on their gravestones, for reasons the descendants know only as
"family habit." I've read about these people, and it is quite fascinating
to trace the current exhibition of halacha by people who never heard of it.
One of the ladies in my congregation is the daughter of conversos who is now
returning to Judaism, studying for her own conversion.

Off, now, to sew banners for Coronation; I have to be in Atlanta on
business that weekend, so will miss the festivities and feast, sorry
List-Papa! At least it's something I can do ahead of time.
