They are cowpeas. :-) Seriously though, they are technically beans and belong
to the Vigna spp. The leaves, flowers and fruits are beanlike as is there
culture. 

For what it's worth broad beans have a leaf structure, etc. that is similar to
peas. :-)

Black-eyed peas are beans of the species Vigna. Old World  You may lower your
pen and begin revising. :-)
