	In which culture(s)? A quick search failed to turn up a reference to
ika (squid) as a food in pre-Edo Japan, though I would be surprised to
learn it was not eaten.

	I don't think this is a reasonable assumption. Even leaving aside
religious limitations, there are any number of potential foods that we
choose not to eat today. Why would it be different in the Middle Ages?

	As I said, I would be surprised to learn that ika was not eaten,
considering the seafood I can find reference to, but I'm not going to
make the assumption that they did.
