A little Anthro to throw in here:

Couvre feu = fire cover = "Curfew" in modern language! My french spelling is
off, so I apologise for the non-caffeineated brain usage this a.m. Anyway,
to be home by the time the fire was covered for the evening was the
"curfew"! I suppose it happened at an appointed hour in any given household
in France (poss when certain church bells marked the hours), which is
probably how the word was associated with a Time, rather than a chore.
