Actually I heard it was the early part of the last century. It seems Thomas
Jefferson was quite the expermental gardner, and in fact grew "Love Apples" in
his garden and used them. He supposedly ate one in the town square to prove
it's harmlessness. Years later, when people were using them, and someone would
warn that they were poisonous they would say, "No, Tom ate those". ::Diving
